County asked to set election or approve expansion

The leaders of an effort to expand a zoning district east of Kalispell to include land where a water-bottling plant is planned have asked the Flathead County commissioners to set a Nov. 7 election for a ballot issue on the district expansion. A second option, their attorney suggested, is for the commissioners to reconsider their earlier vote and approve the Egan Slough Zoning District expansion.

Voters to decide zoning proposal’s fate

We can vote to zone out...

Flathead County voters will decide whether to expand a zoning district in an agricultural area near Creston, after a petition secured enough signatures by Tuesday to place the question on a future county-wide election ballot.

The proposal is identical to one that was unanimously struck down by the Flathead County commissioners last year, and is being advanced by a group of landowners and volunteers concerned with the potential impacts of a planned water-bottling plant that would fall within the boundaries of the proposed Egan Slough Zoning District expansion.

How Ontario Canada handles their water bottlers

The Ontario government has made it official by announcing fees for bottlers of water will jump from $3.71 for a million litres of groundwater taken to $503.71 per million litres, later this summer.

“This increased fee, along with the other measures we’ve taken, will help increase groundwater protection and scientific understanding of how to best manage this vital resource,” Environment and Climate Change Minister Glen Murray said in a statement Thursday.

Fight Over Mt. Shasta Water Bottling Plant Gets Political

Residents near Mt. Shasta concerned about a water bottling plant launched a ballot initiative to tighten bottling rules, but were defeated. Now, one claims the other side used an astroturf campaign and violated campaign finance rules.

Bottled water overtakes soda as America’s No. 1 drink — and you should avoid both

Bottled water is not without chemicals, according to studies of European bottled waters carried out in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France — one published in 2011 and the other in 2013 — by the Goethe University Frankfurt’s Department of Aquatic Ecotoxicology. Among the main compounds Wagner found: Endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, which can act like hormones in the body and have been linked to diabetes, breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. (The International Bottled Water Association said the origin of these EDCs may have been environmental rather than from a packaging material.) (Not so)

Water bottling plant raises numerous concerns

My name is Jerry Williams and I live in Columbia Falls. Last night I attended a meeting at Flathead High School conducted by Water for Flathead’s Future in opposition to the water bottling plant proposed in the Creston area.

I am both angry and incensed that our county commissioners, the DNRC, and DEQ have allowed this proposed bottling plant to get this far along without a single environmental impact study. Not only does it appear each agency rubber-stamped the application and allowed Montana Artesian Water Company to get initial approval of the application, but also the issue raises questions of integrity on the part of these elected and appointed agencies. The following issues are very disturbing to not only the people living in the Creston area, but also to all citizens in the Flathead Valley:

Water-bottling plant puts risk on neighbors

In my opinion, if the Montana Artesian Water Company is allowed to commence operations, many wells on the inter-connected shallow, intermediate and deep aquifers will eventually go dry.
